This is an answer to (i’m faster than my shadow) who re-blogged one of my previous post (“The Hand of Miles Davies”, by Irving Penn) by adding a comment: “he’s [M. Davies] so doing the shocker. you know it.” I don’t have access to a “ask” box, so here is my answer.
No, I really don’t think so. First: from what I read, the photo (here: the one on the right) does not fill the description of a “shocker" (hand gesture with a sexual connotation). Second: when Irving Penn takes the hand of a musician, the first thing which comes to mind is that this hand is, mmmm…. playing music?!? At least, it is my interpretation of this amazing "portrait".
Anyhow, more from the serie by Irving Penn (lt to rt), all taken in New York (1986):The Palm of Miles Davis (via MA), The Hand of Miles Davis (via MA) and The Hand of Miles Davies (B) (via PdP)
