Andreas Feininger on “amateur” photography

"Amateur" means "lover", and amateurs are people who do something because they love to do it; they are interested in the thing for itself and not just as a means of making money. Amateurs are idealists. And amateurs are people who don’t take "no" for an answer when it comes to their hobby. They slave and they save for their hobby’s sake, to earn a few free hours and a few extra dollars to make possible those moments which for them make life worth living. Amateurs make good photographers…

And by the same token, amateurs make the best professionals if they have sufficient courage to drop an earlier profession, to shelve everything they worked so hard for, and to start anew as photographers because they love making pictures […]
