Rolf Brandt (1906-1986) was a British artist and influential teacher born in Germany who moved to London in 1933. He is known particularly for his haunting book illustrations from the 1930s and ’40s; subtle and sophisticated abstract paintings of the 1950s; witty and inventive drawings and collages of the 1960s and ’70s; and his final major series of works – the painted wooden constructions exploring colour theory and optical art made in the 1960s and ’70s. Street Scene or Couple in Peckham, 1936 -by Bill Brandt
“A characteristic of Brandt’s documentary photographs is his use of his family and friends to act out social roles. Thus, his brother Rolf and sister-in-law Ester are often to be found in Brandt’s early books.” (V&A)
